Will my bike/ATV be too loud?
We often get asked this question, however, it is usually not possible for us to know what kind of sound level to expect from a bike/ATV until it is measured. We would like to share what we have observed not to be a problem and what bikes/ATV’s are almost certain to have problems passing the sound test.
Usually not a problem: If you ride with an unmodified stock exhaust system that has been properly maintained, you will have a very good chance of passing the sound test. Most two-strokes, although they sometimes sound louder than a four-stroke, will not have a problem passing (to date we have only had one two-stroke fail). After market quite series exhaust system are usually better than the stock system (i.e. FMF Q series and others).
Usually a problem: Poorly maintained stock systems or any modifications to the stock exhaust (removal of the spark arrestor, restrictor, etc.) will be a problem. This is especially true for mid and large bore four-strokes. Four-strokes in general have a much lower frequency sound than a two-stroke. That four-stroke sound tends to carry further and will have a harder time passing the sound test. Closed course competition after market exhaust systems (regardless of their cost) will almost always be too loud even on small bore machines.
Hope this helps: Sorry to have to be such a stickler on this issue, however, loud bikes/ATV are causing the closure of riding areas across the country. (http://www.sharetrails.org/releases/media/index.cfm?story=218). Chasing everyone down to check sound levels is the last thing we would like to be doing. Please help us to keep this and other areas open for riding.
Thanks,
Lori & David
Noise Hurts: If you have a loud bike/ATV, please find somewhere else to ride! Riders with modified or stock exhaust systems that are too loud will be asked to leave. Sound level: 100 dB "A" weighted 20 inches from the exhaust.
